Greece is a developed and stable democracy with a modern economy. Located near the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Greece is an entrance gate to the European Union centered both geographically and politically in south-eastern Europe. Once a cradle of European civilization, whose ancient scholars made great advances in philosophy, medicine, mathematics and astronomy, Greece now maintains graduates of the country’s educational institutions who are distinguished by the high educational level that these universities provide. A large percentage of recruitment in Greek and multinational companies in financial sectors such as commerce, tourism and offering of services is made by these graduates. Institutions relate their education to the market's trends proportionately as a result of numerous years of experience and their affiliations with other top European and American universities. By studying in Greece, one acquires the infrastructure needed for a successful professional career as well as the qualifications for further studies.
Higher education in Greece consists of two sectors: the university sector, which
includes universities, and the technological sector, which includes Higher
Technological Education Institutions (TEI). University Level Education is provided
by 24 Universities and 16 Technological Educational Institutes (TEIs), all of which
are considered accredited by Greek state.
All the Higher Tertiary state-accredited universities in Greece are public. The
duration of the undergraduate degree programs for most disciplines is 4 years
(240E.C.T.S). Programs in engineering, dentistry, pharmacology, agronomics,
forestry, along with some programs in fine arts, have duration of 5 years (300
E.C.T.S). Medicine is the only discipline with a duration of 6 years. These credits
are accumulative and transferable under the European Credit Transfer and
Accumulation System (ECTS
Geece is a warm and welcoming country with a high level of English spoken, particularly in the cities. Rooms and apartments can be rented throughout and the cost of renting a one-room apartment in Athens or Thessaloniki is approximately €270 per month. It is estimated by university websites that the cost of living in Athens is approximately €700 per month for all expenses. You might instead choose to live with a host family, which can be an amazing experience and a great way to learn about Greek culture, family structure, history and, of course, the language. Deciding where to live in another country is an exciting endeavor. Finding the right apartment or flat to fit your taste, needs and lifestyle often takes initiative, research and a bit of luck. Universities offer an array of housing options and often have great resources for seeking the right place for your stay. For many students abroad, the preferred option is to find an apartment off campus in order to further connect with the community and understand their host city. As in most European countries, Greece offers a plethora of options for students such as flat shares, apartments, university dorms, studios and single rooms for rent for any taste or budget.
